Are you looking for a gift for Mother’s day that is easy to make and customizable? If so, then today’s DIY project is for you!
With just a few supplies and in under an hour, you can make a Mother’s Day decoupage frame for a special mom in your life!
The best part is that you get to pick the colors, patterns and pictures that will suit her taste, so you will create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece for your special lady!
When I was at the craft store a couple of months ago, scrapbook paper was on sale 6 for $0.99! I took a look to see if there was anything that caught my eye. The papers that I chose were all near each other and complemented each other so nicely that I decided to pick them up.
I get inspiration for projects from all kinds of places. Sometimes it’s Pinterest, sometimes magazines, but sometimes I get inspiration from just walking into a craft or home decor store and seeing what catches my eye. That was the case with this frame.
To make this picture frame, you will need an unfinished wood craft frame, scrapbook paper in the colors and patterns of your choice, decoupage medium, a sponge brush, a coordinating embellishment and a picture.
If you have never attempted to decoupage before, don’t fear! It is relatively easy. My 9-year-old daughter decoupaged this wood peace sign for her room while I was making the frame. Because you are just ripping the paper and gluing it on as you go, there is no exact right way to do it. A couple of times I touched the wet paper and got a hole, but I just pasted down another piece over top of it. If that happens to you, just go with it. No one will ever know…I promise! Start by ripping strips of paper for the frame. Once you have some paper ready, use a sponge brush to apply your decoupage medium to the area where you will be working. It dries pretty fast, so apply it one section at a time. The decoupage medium is essentially glue, so after you apply it to the frame, apply a strip of paper. Now apply another one, making sure they overlap and the frame doesn’t show through. After you’ve applied a few strips of paper, apply a coat of decoupage medium over top. Dip your finger in water and smooth out any bubbles.
Work quickly because the decoupage glue dries pretty quickly. Also, if you fuss with the paper too much or get it too wet, it will tear.
Continue adding strips of paper until you have achieved your desired look. Once you are finished applying the paper, smooth a layer of the decoupage medium evenly over the entire frame using the foam brush to seal it. Once it is dry, add your embellishment and you photo and you are done!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I hope you have a wonderful and blessed day!
